Why I Prefer Being a Blogger VS An Influencer

If you’ve been feeling pressure to be on camera, to make reels, to show your face because that’s what everyone says you need to do to build an online business… I want to tell you something.

You don’t have to.

I know that sounds too simple. Everyone’s talking about video content right now. Instagram reels, TikTok, YouTube shorts. The algorithm loves it, the growth is faster, the engagement is higher.

But what if the thought of being on camera makes you want to quit before you even start?

What if you’re not a performer? What if documenting your life sounds exhausting instead of exciting? What if you just want to write?

Here’s what I wish someone had told me when I started. You’re allowed to build differently.

If Video Feels Like Performing (Not Creating)

Maybe you’ve tried to film yourself and it felt forced. You set up your phone, started recording, and immediately felt awkward. Like you were performing instead of being yourself.

Or maybe you haven’t even tried yet because just thinking about it makes your stomach turn. The lighting, the setup, wondering if you look okay, if your voice sounds weird, if anyone will even watch.

That’s how I felt. And I kept thinking something was wrong with me because everyone else seemed so comfortable on camera.

But here’s what I realized. Some people are natural performers. They love being on camera. Their energy comes through in video and it works beautifully for them.

And some of us are writers. We process through words. We connect through honesty on a page, not through a ring light.

Neither is better. They’re just different paths.

What Blogging Actually Looks Like

Blogging means you wake up, make coffee, and write. You don’t need to look camera-ready. You don’t need lighting or a clean background or the perfect outfit. You just need your laptop and whatever’s on your mind.

You write blog posts that bring traffic from Pinterest and Google for months after you publish them. You build an email list through words that connect. You sell digital products because people trust your writing, not because they’ve seen your face.

And when life gets messy, when you’re not okay, when everything feels chaotic, you don’t have to perform it for an audience. You can process it privately and write about it later if you want. Or not at all.

That privacy, that ability to be human without documenting every moment, might be exactly what you need.

The Part About Money (Because That Matters Too)

I make triple what I made at my hotel reception job. From writing. From blog posts that keep working long after I publish them. From emails people read and products they buy because my words connected with something they were feeling.

Video might make you money faster if you’re good at it and you enjoy it. But writing makes you money too. Just differently. Just slower at first and then it compounds.

One blog post can bring you traffic for years. One email can convert someone into a customer months after you wrote it. One course you write once can sell over and over.

You don’t need to be on camera five times a day to build something real.

If You’ve Been Waiting to Start

Maybe you’ve been telling yourself you’ll start when you feel more confident. When you lose weight. When your space looks better. When you figure out how to use a ring light.

But what if you’re waiting for the wrong thing? What if you don’t need any of that because you’re not supposed to be on camera at all?

What if your path is writing, and you’ve been forcing yourself toward video because you thought it was the only way?

You’re allowed to build through words. Blog posts, emails, honest writing that connects. That’s a real business model. That’s how I built mine.

Start With What Feels Natural

If writing feels easier than filming, start there. If you’d rather type than talk, build around that. If the idea of blogging excites you and video makes you want to hide, that’s your answer.

You don’t need to force yourself to be someone you’re not just because the algorithm likes video content right now. The algorithm changes. Your natural strengths don’t.

Build the way that feels sustainable to you. Build the way that doesn’t wreck your nervous system. Build the way that lets you actually live your life instead of performing it.

That’s what blogging gave me.

And if any of this resonated, it might be what it gives you too.

If you want to learn how to build through blogging instead of video, Her Soft Blog Mini-Playbook walks you through everything. WordPress setup, Pinterest traffic strategy, monetization without ads, turning writing into income. Everything I learned building this the quiet way.
