Live Like Carrie Bradshaw: How To Start a Paid Newsletter

There is a scene burned into the brain of every woman who has ever wanted more than a cubicle and a commute. Carrie Bradshaw, silk robe, laptop open on her desk in her Upper East Side apartment, typing her column at midnight and calling it work.

She was not in an office. She was not on a Zoom call. She was not performing for anyone.

She was just writing. And somehow that writing paid for her apartment, her Manolos and her entire life. 😄

I think about that image a lot.

Because what Carrie Bradshaw actually had, before anyone had a name for it, was a paid newsletter. A loyal audience of people who showed up every week to read her words and paid for the privilege.

And in 2026, you can have exactly that, minus the cigarettes, the New York rent and the fictional TV budget.

The Income Stream Nobody Talks About Enough

Everyone talks about courses, digital products, coaching. And yes, those things work. But paid newsletters do something that none of those things can fully replace, and that is giving you recurring income.

Course sales are unpredictable.

One good launch then silence, one good week then nothing, starting from zero every single month. A paid newsletter changes that completely.

When someone subscribes they pay you automatically every month with no new campaign or launch needed. Just money landing in your account because you showed up and wrote something worth reading.

300 paid subscribers at $9 a month is $2,700 recurring before you sell anything else. That kind of stability changes not just your bank account but the entire energy you build from.

Why You Need To Build The Free Version First

Most people want to launch a paid newsletter immediately and then wonder why nobody is subscribing.

The reason is simple. Nobody pays for writing from a stranger. They pay for writing from someone they already trust, already look forward to hearing from, already feel like they know personally.

That trust takes time to build and it only comes from consistently showing up in someone’s inbox week after week and giving them something worth reading.

I have been doing exactly that with my free diary, Designed By Her Diaries, for almost a year now.

Every Wednesday and Saturday a new diary lands in my subscribers inboxes, personal, unfiltered, real stories about building a writing based business.

Open rates climbed to 53%. Subscribers started hitting reply to tell me the diary felt like hearing from a friend. 300 new women found the diary in a single week.

That is the audience you build a paid newsletter on.

What People Actually Pay For

Not every newsletter makes money and it is worth being honest about that.

The ones that do have one thing in common, people pay for a specific feeling or transformation they cannot get anywhere else for free.

The newsletters that convert tend to fall into a few categories.

Behind the scenes of a real business or life that people aspire to be. Niche expertise that saves someone time, money or confusion. A personal voice so specific and honest that reading it feels like therapy.

Or a combination of all three.

What people will not pay for is generic advice they can Google, content they can already find for free on your blog or social media, or writing that feels like it could have come from anyone.

The question to ask yourself is not what do I want to write about but what do my readers keep coming back for and asking me more about.

That answer is your paid newsletter.

What Actually Goes Behind The Paywall

This is the question I get asked most. If you are already giving value for free, what do you put behind a paywall?

The answer is depth and access.

Your free newsletter warms people up and shows them who you are, what you stand for, what your life looks like. It is the version of you that the whole world can see.

The paid version is the group chat. The things you would only tell your closest circle. The unfiltered behind the scenes that you are not quite ready to broadcast to everyone.

For me that is going to look like real revenue numbers, what is actually working and what is flopping, the fears and doubts I only hint at in the free diary, and the behind the scenes of building this business that most people never see.

I am calling it Designed By Her Diaries: Unfiltered. And I am launching it this May, after months of building trust and giving free value to the women who have been reading along.

The free diary gets them in the door. The paid version is for the ones who want to come all the way in.

How To Actually Set It Up

The platform I use and recommend for everything newsletter related is Kit.

I have been building my email list on Kit since the beginning and when it comes to setting up a paid newsletter it is genuinely the easiest option out there.

You can set up paid subscriptions, manage your free and paid subscriber lists separately, automate delivery of paid content and handle everything in one place with a clean simple setup that actually works.

The free plan lets you build your list and get comfortable long before you ever think about going paid. Which is exactly what I recommend doing first.

The Carrie Bradshaw Formula

You want to write consistently and build trust. Give value freely until people are genuinely excited to pay for more. Then open the door.

Carrie did not charge people to read her column from day one. She built a readership first and became someone worth paying attention to. You do the same.

Start your free newsletter, show up every week, write things worth reading. And when your audience is warm and loyal and hungry for more, that is when you go paid.

The laptop lifestyle is not fiction. It is just writing, an email list and the patience to build something real.

You already have the first ingredient!

💌 Ready to start your newsletter? I use and recommend Kit for everything, it is the easiest way to build your list, start your free newsletter and eventually launch paid subscriptions when the time is right.
